August 2015 - Sensible Stylista

Never Tear Us Apart

It's safe to say that BCBGMaxAzria is one of my favorite stores!  I've always been a huge fan of their designs - I'm like a kid in a candy store every time I go - but they're usually way out of my budget.  Luckily, they have factory outlets for bargainistas like myself.  I get my items at affordable prices because I shop blowout sales at outlet malls.  From my experience, after-Christmas and end-of-season sales are the best.  They (in this case, BCBG) usually give customers an extra 30% off of everything.  Personally, I go straight to the clearance racks in the back because I want the best deal possible - I don't even look at anything "full-price."

I picked this skirt up at the BCBG factory outlet last week for $20.  It was originally $200 or so - sorry, I can't remember the exact price off the top of my head. I figured it'd be good time to go shopping because back-to-school sales usually rock.  I totally lucked out because they were giving customers a huge discount.  When I saw this skirt hanging in the clearance section, it was love at first sight.  This flouncy bandage skirt is perfect for work AND play.  It's high-waisted so it highlights the small of your waist, creating a flattering hourglass figure.  Pair it with a sexy crop for a fun night out on the town or throw on a blazer, classic button-front, and tights to ooze business casual.  Unfortunately, I don't have a skirt link for you guys, but as a consolation, I'll share other cute options below.
Different skirts for your viewing pleasure (different price points):
I styled my skirt with a casual yet girly top.  I picked it up at Forever 21 way back in the day because I really liked the crochet detailing!  I finished the look off with statement pearls.  Since I kept everything else fairly simple, I wanted to elevate my outfit with a gorg piece of jewelry.

Here are some other fun necklace options for you guys:

My Favorite Polka Dot Skirt

I'm all about my new Lime & Vine top today on SS. This chic top, made of 100% cotton, oozes serious steeze (style + ease) with its subtle weave pattern and delicate pleat detailing.  I'm wearing a size small because I like loose silhouettes, but an XS would've also fit!  For those of you interested, this piece is also available in cantaloupe and black HERE for $54.  I styled the top with one of my all time favorites.  I've had this polka dot pencil skirt for years now - I purchased it way back in the day at Forever 21 - and I still wear it all the time.  Their clothing's hit or miss so be careful when shopping.  They sell a lot of cute clothing, but their quality's sometimes "eh" due to shotty fabric. They do have gems though!  You just have to be patient and sift through everything because their stores are usually full to the brim.
Here's a full body shot for you guys!  I kept things simple on the accessory front because I wanted to rock a clean, classic look today.  However, my bag kind of doubles as a necklace because of its chain strap.  To finish off the ensemble, I threw on a pair of animal print pumps.  A pop of color (or a bold print in this case) really goes a long way.  I purchased these lovely shoes at Off Saks a few years ago so I don't a link for you guys. I'll make sure to link similar options below for both the skirt and shoes.

One last close-up shot of my top before I say farewell!  I hope you enjoyed today's look.  How would you have styled this top?

All I Have

A while back, my gorgeous intern, Zoe Luiz, wrote a fabulous article on Fall's hottest trends - click here if you missed the aforementioned post. To my excitement, she listed the chic yet comfortable sweaterdress.  I've been a fan of this piece for years now because, in my humble opinion, it's a classic.  Now, I love reading about fads, but trends come and go SO quickly.  Don't feel pressured to wear what's "in" at the time.  Wear what makes you feel confident and beautiful.  Now, if you happen to LOVE what's "hot," that's a totally different story - go crazy and have a ball!  Just make sure you don't buy something because it's popular.  If you're looking to experiment, I recommending shopping affordable stores like Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe.  You don't want to splurge on something you'll only wear a few times!
Now, let's break down today's outfit of the day.  My Tahari dress is from TJ Maxx - I purchased it a year ago on clearance for a fraction of the price!  I absolutely love the design because it's classy and versatile. Because the design's "simple," I styled it with a beautiful silk scarf courtesy of VeVelle.
For those of you unfamiliar with the brand, they're a new line with an exclusive collection of luxury scarves.  Founded by Al Semerville in 2013, his love for exquisite garments was instilled at an early age.  He spent his teenage years enjoying the intricacies of couture and dreamt of using fashion as a vehicle to showcase the hidden treasures of Haitian and Caribbean culture.  After the devastating 2010 Haiti earthquake, Al put his dream in motion and created VeVelle.  Their scarves are made of 100% silk twill, chiffon or georgette.  My piece is called Pas De Trois, and it's available HERE.

Moving on to my bag! This piece holds a lot of sentimental value to me because it was a gift from my dad, AND it was my first designer purse.  He bought it for me in Asia during a business trip!  To be honest, when he gave it to me, I wasn't thrilled.  Don't get me wrong! I was SUPER grateful and moved by his generous gesture, but I didn't think the bag was particularly cute, ha.  I was a freshman in college, and I remember thinking, "man, I feel like a grandma carrying this around." I took really good care of it so it's in mint condition, which is awesome because I absolutely LOVE it now.  The simple design complements any and every ensemble, and the piece can easily be dressed up and down.  It goes to show how one's taste really evolves over time!  Do you guys have any pieces you initially disliked but grew to love?
Also, since I bought this dress last year, I don't have a link for you guys! Here are some other adorable options for y'all to browse:

Workwear Wednesday: My Scoobie Skirt Remix

A while back, I partnered up with Scoobie to style a fab work-friendly look for you guys.   If you missed the aforementioned post, click HERE.  I liked the skirt SO much that I decided to remix it today on SS for yet another office-appropriate ensemble.  Instead of styling it with a classic button-front, I chose to go with a bold, printed blouse that I recently purchased it at Talbots.  They were having a huge storewide sale so I copped this top for $30 or so.  Today's outfit works because both items (the skirt & top) share the same beige which creates a cohesive feel.  I didn't want to add "loud" accessories on top, so I kept things simple with a nude designer-inspired bag and a pair of cap-toed heels.

On another note, the Scoobie skirt I'm wearing below is currently on sale HERE for $35.50.  It was originally $71 so it's obviously a really great deal. I recommend purchasing it STAT!  It's seriously one of the cutest pieces I own, and the quality's legit - think Banana Republic meets BCBG. If you have any questions about the item, don't hesitate to tweet, comment, whatever.  You guys know that I'm always here for you!
Top:  Talbots || Skirt:  Scoobie (on sale for $35.50) || Bag:  Chicwish || Shoes:  Light in the Box

August Favorites

1.  Henne Lip Balm ($22) - I'm seriously LOVING this product.  It leaves your lips super soft overnight.  A little goes a long way so don't go too crazy slathering this on even if you're tempted to.  $22 is steep so you want to get the most bang for your buck.  With that said, this item does also double as intensive moisturizer for dry areas like hands, elbows, and heels.  Personally, I'd save it - better to use vaseline on those areas!  FYI, this product's certified USDA organic and made in the USA - they also don't test on animals.

2.  Spongelle Anti-Cellulite Buffer ($25) - For a luxe bath experience, cop this goodie stat!  Infused with exotic extracts and rich moisturizers, Spongelle keeps skin glowing use after use.  This buffer utilizes SalSphere technology while massaging, smoothing, exfoliating, and detoxifying areas prone to cellulite.   This item boosts circulation and helps you feel mad toned.  As a plus, it smells like heaven, and you can use it 30+ times.  A huge thanks to Brandbacker for sending me this to review. Use code BBLOGGER20 to get an extra 20% off your purchased - valid until October 19th.

3.  Solemates Shoe Rescue Kit ($19.95) - First of all, I have to apologize for sharing the wrong picture above. I was a dummy and collaged the wrong product - sorry, their two kits look hella similar, ha.  I can't get enough of Solemates though.  I own a variety of their products, and man, they REALLY come in handy.  Honestly, I'd feature their entire site if I could.  This particular kit comes with a butt ton of goodies including: one pair of high-heelers (magical add-ons that protect your heels and prevent them from sinking into grass), nail clipper + file, peppermint foot wipe, bandages, anti-skid pads, heel gel cushions, and more.  Also, while you're at it, I also recommend purchasing their leather protector ($10) and shoe freshener ($10).

4.  Ecotools Fresh & Flawless Brush Set ($14.99) - This 5-piece set is designed to hide imperfections for the smoothest finish possible.  It includes the following: flat concealer brush, buffing concealer brush, precision foundation brush, complexion blending brush, and full powder brush.  This set has seriously changed my make-up routine - application is so much easier!  Solid tools make such a difference.  I can't recommend these enough!  I def. prefer them to the e.l.f. brushes I used previously. FYI, these babies are travel sized so you can carry them around with ease for touch-ups.

5.  Burt's Bees Lip Crayons ($8.99) - Hands down, my new favorite lip product.  I currently own 4 out of the 6 colors available - rest assured, I'm definitely going to purchase the others as well.  These creamy crayons give you full coverage and moisturize while doing so.  My lips get really dry which sucks when applying lipstick - skin flakes and all that nasty shiz, ain't nobody got time for that, ha.  I don't have ANY issues with these though so make sure you guys check these out. My favorite shades are Napa Vineyard (a gorgeous deep red) and Sedona Sands (a subtle pink that enhances your natural lip color).

What are some of your current fave products this month?

My Customized Two-Piece Set

I'm SO ridiculously stoked to partner up with Toprom today on Sensible Stylista.  If you're looking to impress, you seriously have to hit them up STAT.  They're all about custom-made pieces that are inspired by classic glamour.  They pay close attention to detail, using top-grade crystals, pearls, and sequins that are HAND-SEWN by experienced craftsmen.  I'll be "modeling" the Rebecca dress for you guys.  This stunning two-piece is a dream.  The design's super trendy and versatile - I love that it can worn for different occasions like formal events, romantic dinners, bachelorette parties, and so on and so forth.
Let's take a closer look!  I told you the sequins were beautiful.  This two-piece - made of 100% polyester - screams high-quality. Yes, the set IS pricy - sold here for $199 - but think of it as an investment.  You'll wear this for years to come!  Remember, it's all about cost-per-wear.  FYI: custom sizing is an additional $29, but I highly recommend going with that option because fit is EVERYTHING! The top has a built-in bra so take that into account when you're submitting measurements.  The skirt is approximately 28" long from waist to hem and has a back slit.  OH, and before I forget, make sure you guys sign up for their mailing list to get an extra $35 off your purchase.  You know me, always trying to find the BEST deals for you guys *grins*
I accessorized with a lace clutch and classic hoop earrings so my two-piece could take center stage.
Here's a close-up shot of my earrings courtesy of Berricle!  Aren't they absolutely gorgeous?  I've been looking for new hoops, and these stunners SLAY.  They're made of fine sterling silver and set with 85 cubic zirconia CZ.  They're 1" in length, 0.2" in width, and have hinged snap backs - available here!

The Velvet Mini-Dress

So, I recently purchased a DSLR, which is really exciting but also frustrating because I don't know the first thing about photography.  Please bear with me while I learn how to use my new camera!  I did, however, enlarge my pictures for you guys!  Please let me know if y'all like the new layout by commenting below - your feedback means the WORLD to me!

Anyway, I'm partnering up with Chaser again for today's post.  I featured them HERE previously on SS.  I'm head over heels in love with my new velvet mini-dress!  This piece is such a stunner.  The back's even sexier because it's vent out.  Clicky HERE to see for yourself.  Sorry, my cam's battery died before I could snap a pic *hangs head in shame*
Heads up, this brand's not cheap!  This dress costs a pretty penny, but I promise you, the quality matches the price tag.  Their line's like boho BCBG.  If you like Free People or Anthropologie, you'll adore Chaser.  Regarding today's styling, I paired my dress with a fringe bag and gladiator heels to capitalize on the boho feel.  Since both pieces are fierce, I didn't accessorize with jewelry.  Too much can be tacky in my opinion.  What do you guys think? How would you have worn this dress?

Celeb Style for Less: Olivia Palermo

Olivia Palermo needs no introduction.  Fashionistas everywhere worship her style, and she's cemented herself as a fashion icon with her impeccable taste.  Everything she wears is gold, and this look is no different.  Her take on fringe is on point! If you want to re-create this look, keep reading to see how you can do so for a fraction of the price.
Shoes:  6PM ($24.99) || Bag: Carlos Santana ($24.97) || Top:  Liberty Garden ($49.97) || Necklace: Robert Rose ($20) || Sunnies:  Urban Outfitters ($18) || Skirt:  Patchington ($69)

Olivia's skirt is no doubt designer, but I managed to find a really similar design for you guys at Bluefly for $69.  She styles the piece with a tan top and belts it to create a cohesive look.  The latter draws the two colors together and highlights her figure while doing so.  She goes all out with the fringe trend in this ensemble by wearing a statement skirt AND carrying a clutch!  I found an adorable alternative for y'all HERE.

It looks like Olivia's mixing metals - her necklace is gold and her belt buckle's silver - but it may be best to stick with the former. It complements the beige hues better in my personal opinion.  The necklace pictured above has a daintier feel compared to the statement piece Olivia's wearing, but it's a versatile item that can be re-worn again and again.  As a plus, it's only $20!  When you purchase a piece, you want to think about all the different ways you can wear it!  That's what I do at least.  It helps me stay practical so I don't blow a ton of money of something I'll only wear once.

Moving on, let's take a look at her shoe game.  Olivia's heels match her skirt perfectly.  There's a lot going on with her outfit so she wears nude shoes to create a neutral canvas.  With that said, instead of wearing simple, nude pumps, she throws on trendy cutout heels!  I found a nice alternative for you guys HERE at 6PM for $24.99.  A total steal for shoes like these!

What do you guys think of this look? Is it too much or just right?

Top 5 Fall Trends

Fall is quickly approaching! Soon, it will be time to embrace the rapidly cooling climate, watch as all the leaves turn golden brown, and, of course, go back to school. I'm going to be starting my Freshman year as a Fashion Merchandising major, so I definitely have to restock my closet with all of fall's hottest pieces. Here are the top 5 trends for this upcoming season:

1. Fur Coats

Fur coats have been popping up everywhere in pop culture fashion. In the amazing, "Feeling Myself" music video, Bey is wearing a gorgeous brown fur coat over a leotard. Guys rock the trend, too! In cold weather, Justin Bieber's almost always spotted in coats with fur. Whether it's full fur, or just a furry hood, this look's gonna be super popular this fall.

Here are some awesome options for you guys to browse:

2. Neoprene Sweatshirts

Like we talked about in our Bathing Suit Edition, neoprene suits were killing it -- everyone was obsessing over Triangl. This fall, that trend is translating into warmer wear. Neoprene is definitely one of my fave fabrics, and although it can be expensive, I definitely reccommend copping something neoprene this season.

Here are some super cute sweatshirts to try out:

3. Cape Coats

So, this trend is probably the funkiest of the bunch. Recently, capes have been dominating high fashion runways -- most of the latest runway shows have had some version of a cape in them. Unfortunately, this trend hasn't quite trickled it's way down to more affordable stores yet. There are definitely some retailers that carry gorgeous, inexpensive capes, but for the most part it's hard to find outside of high-end designer boutiques. But, if you can find an affordable cape, definitely buy it, because this trend's gonna be big!

Here are some really cool capes for you guys:

4. Turtlenecks

Unlike some of the other trends on this list, turtlenecks have been around forever. However, this fall they're coming back in full force! Retailers all over have new, funky turtlenecks that I'm falling even more and more in love with. Like chokers, they may not be the most comfortable, but sometimes beauty is pain, ha!

Check out these really cool turtleneck tops:

5. Sweater Dresses

Everyone has their favorite cable knit sweater, and, similarly, everyone has their favorite dress. The sweater dress combines both of these into one ultra-cute fashion item: the sweater dress! This look is honestly just adorable, and it can combine beautifully with any of the aforementioned trends, ie. the turtleneck sweater dress. In cold weather, simply pair this dress with leggings or tights for an insanely cute and comfortable ensemble.

Definitely try out some of these sweater dresses:

Do you guys like any of these trends? Which one is your favorite? Are there any specific trends you're looking forward to?

Workwear Wednesday: The Printed Shift

Dear shift dresses, thank you for existing.  You make my life so much better, especially when I have fat days.  You know just how to make me feel pretty, ha.  In all seriousness though, shift dresses are the bees knees.  They're cute, comfortable, and super easy to style.  Simply throw a dress on, accessorize with a statement necklace, put on heels (black & neutral = classic standard), and grab your everyday bag.  Four very easy steps for an insanely chic ensemble.  If I'm in a rush, BOOM, my handy dandy formula saves the day!
I don't have any links for you guys today, BUT, I can share other fabulous options with you all.  Here are some other adorable shifts for you guys to browse (varying price points):

Let's take a closer look at my necklace!  My mom picked this piece up for me at Talbots a while back because it was on sale for $30!  I absolutely adore the design - it's timeless.  My mom has the BEST taste.  In fact, I'm going to feature her on SS one of these days.  I swear, she looks like she could be my sister!  Every time we go out, no one believes she's my mom.  I guess we just look like friends hanging out, ha. Let's hope her genes help ME out when I'm older *grins*

I had a chance to review their Tori sandals, and I'm totally in love!  They're so comfortable, and I absolutely love the whimsical print.  I've been wearing them everywhere - they're perfect for running errands, and in my opinion, they're cuter than Birkenstocks.  Regarding size, I recommend that you go down a 1/2 size for the correct fit!  The bottoms massage your feet like whoa.  They're currently on sale here for $49.49 - they were originally $65.99.

My New Favorite Store

So, I officially have a new favorite store!  I'm ALL about Francesca's.  I don't know why I decided to check 'em out recently, but I'm super glad I did.  Everything they carry is gold.  I literally walked around their entire shop thinking, "oh my gosh, I want to BUY their store!"  I actually only bought these shorts, but if I had unlimited funds, I would've purchased all their dresses, ha.

These bottoms were on sale for $10.  Yay for clearance sales!  They're so cute and comfortable!  I absolutely love the print, and the side bow-tie is beyond adorable.  I styled them with my new H&M shirt, also purchased for $10.  I'm actually really proud of today's look because the entire ensemble is under $80, including the shoes and bag!  I'm thinking about starting a new series called, "Under $100."  What do you guys think? Would that be helpful?
Anyways, back to my today's look!  Let's take a closer look at my top!  Isn't the embellished neckline on point? It's like a built-in necklace!  I can't wait to wear this shirt to work.  I'm going to pair it with a pretty skirt and a sharp blazer *grins*

Moving on, I centered today's outfit around my new necklace courtesy of Starfish Project.  This layered pearl necklace is a dream.  It makes me feel like an asian Audrey Hepburn, ha!  My lacy skirt and ruffled blouse make me feel extra girly.  I wanted to keep things simple so I stuck with nude accessories.  I carried my Celine-inspired bag and threw on my favorite Ann Taylor heels to top off my feminine look.  I've been really into classic ensembles as of late.  I think it's safe to say that my style's evolving.

August Fitness Update

Sorry guys, I haven't done a fitness update in forever because things have been really crazy.  Honestly, I'm a little overwhelmed.  I have SO much coming up this fall - I'm trying to prep for it all, but it's driving me a bit cray.  I've been working 16-17 hour days - practicing piano a sh*t ton, studying for comp exams, blogging, and so on and so forth.  There's so much I want to do, but obviously, there are only so many hours in a day.

I was actually doing well on the whole workout front until I got really sick last week.  For those of you keeping up with my snapchats (my username's @sensiblestylist BTW) and tweets, you know I've been really into t25 as of late.  I finished week 2 but then had serious issues with my stomach so I had to take time off.  I had to go get an endoscopy and everything because I kept getting awful stomachaches and felt this weird lump in my throat.  Luckily,  it wasn't anything too serious.  However, I did have to make major changes to my diet.  No more coffee, alcohol, milk or spicy foods.  Ugh.  I used to live on coffee (5-7 cups a day), and I loved eating burn-a-hole-in-my-stomach-hot foods *le sigh* health comes first!  It's better than feeling like garbage so I'll suck it up and find healthier dishes I enjoy.  I know, I know.  I'm forever the optimist!

Anywho, since I had to take a week off, I decided to start the whole series over again.  I'm such a huge fan of Shaun T.  His workouts are always fun and effective.  I did Ab Intervals today, and I literally cried, ha.  If you're unfamiliar with the program, it's 15 weeks long with the following levels: alpha, beta, and gamma.  The set comes with 16 different modules, and each workout is only 25 minutes long.  However, he doubles up on you on Fridays so you have one 50 min. sesh each week.

I'm "modeling" my current fave workout garb courtesy of Public Myth today on SS.  I'm seriously obsessed with their activewear - think Lulu Lemon except hotter.  When I first saw the mesh detailing, I immediately thought, "shit, I hope this is comfortable."  I lucked out because it totally was.  Who would've thought right?
BTW, I obviously didn't work out before taking these.  I wore my hair down and did my make-up because I wanted to look purdy for you all, ha! Shooting activewear's really tough, especially when your body still has a long way to go!  If this was a post-gym shot, my hair would be in a messy pony, and I'd be dripping with sweat.  Hey, you gotta sweat like a pig if you wanna look like a fox *rawr*

Let's take a closer look at my pants!  The mesh paneling is on point.  Oh, and before I forget, these pants are available HERE, and my sports bra is available HERE for those of you interested.  FYI: they offer free shipping on orders $200+.
Baring my midriff for you guys.  I took a shot for you all so you could see my bra clearly.  I always wear an oversized tank on top because I'm self conscious of my tummy & back when I'm working out!  It's my goal to eliminate jiggle and eventually exercise sans tank.  I definitely still have a long way to go, and I'm ok with that! I'm doing the best that I can, and that's what matters.  Remember, it's about progress, not perfection!

I was in the best shape of my life when I was in NYC (2009-2011).  I ate so clean - and I mean I ate clean, I didn't do any of that starvation bullshit - and worked out at least 1.5 hours a day!  I was 103 lbs of lean muscle, and I remember thinking, "damn, if I could get rid of my back and arm fat, I'd be so happy."  Now I'm 120 lbs, and I just want to get back to where I was, ha!  Funny how that all works.  I don't really care about my weight though.  I just want to be healthy - eff the scale!  I want to run with ease and crank push-ups out like a boss.  I'll get there, slowly but surely!
On top of my t25 workouts, I've been supplementing with cardio 3x a week.  I'll either run for 20 minutes on the treadmill or do jump rope for 15.  I don't know about you guys, but I think running's a lot easier in comparison.  There are a ton of different workouts available on pinterest if you're interested!  I simply set a timer and go.  I use a TKO rope because it has a soft rubber coated grip.  It's 9 feet long and is made of solid vinyl.  It's currently on sale HERE at Macy's for $14.99 (originally $30).  They also sell exercise mats, push up bars, ab wheels, and more.
While I'm at it, let me share my current workout list with you guys!  Here's what I'm currently jammin' to on my pod-pod - lots of Yellow Claw this month!  I can't believe I just discovered them. Their music is absolutely SICK!  I've listened to "Shotgun" at least 5 times already today, ha.  Oh, AND they're following me on twitter *swoons*  I'm super active on there so make sure you guys come find me - clicky HERE to tweet me!

Celeb Style For Less: Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne's new film, Paper Towns, was just released, and the superstar's transition from modeling into acting is flawless. Not only is she amazing on runways and movies, Cara's urban fashion sense is on point. See how you can get this laid back look for an affordable price this fall:
Pants: Pacsun || Top: JCPenny || Shoes: Skechers || Jacket: H&M || Shades: Charming Charlie

Cara's ripped camo jeans are effortlessly cool. I'm obsessed with all things distressed, and lately, I've been wearing camo everything, so I absolutely love this pant style. Pacsun carries similar bottoms for $50. A simple but important piece is her plain, black, boatneck shirt, which JCPenney has for only $8. Cara's stylish leather jacket highlights her shirt's navy undertones! H&M has a jacket just like it for $50.

Moving on to shoes, Cara is wearing classic Timberland boots in black. Timberland's in this style usually cost around $130.  If you have the money to invest, I definitely recommend picking up a pair. I own the exact pair Cara's wearing, and I'm literally obsessed with them -- they're super comfy and can be worn in any condition. But, if you don't wanna splurge, Skechers sells similar shoes for half the price: $67.

Finally, Cara's adorable aviators are the perfect accessory. She doesn't seem to be wearing any jewelry, but with this look, that really works for her. You can get a pair of these sunglasses from Charming Charlie for $9. If you wanna add some extra bling, a long necklace would be ideal.
