How-to Contour like a Pro

You guys have all seen contouring everywhere. We've talked about it on Sensible Stylista several times already, and we constantly see crazy transformations on our Instagram feeds. I personally don't do this everyday, but it's fun to experiment with new looks for parties or nights out! Here is how you achieve a chiseled face with contouring:

1. Figure out where the high points and shadows are in your face.

Contouring is all about accentuating the high and low parts of your face. Basically, you want to put dark shades where the shadows of your face are and light shades where the highlights naturally are. There's obviously not an exact science to this since everyone's face is very different.

There are six main face shapes (pictured above), and each should be contoured differently. Figure out your shape by shining a light onto your face and studying where the light and dark parts are. I do this with a mirror that has a built-in light, but you can just shine your phone's flash onto your face - it works just as well.

2. Gather your products.

There are two main ways to contour- you can use cream or powder. Cream contouring is used for a severely dramatic effect that's almost harsh whereas powder contour is far less intense in comparison.  However, a lot of people double up and layer powder contour on top of their cream contour!  The latter's achieved with different shades of foundation or concealer while the former's executed with bronzers and, unsurprisingly, powder.

There are tons of powder contour kits, like the famous Anastasia Beverly Hills palette, that come with all the shades you need! For cream, you can buy pro-concealer palettes that are meant for makeup artists that work on many different skin tones. I prefer powder contour!  My favorite bronzer is Too Faced's Chocolate Soleil Bronzer, and my favorite highlighter is Laura Geller's Baked Gelato Swirl Illuminator

Here are a bunch of products that are perfect for contouring:

3. Buy the right brushes!

Brushes are an extremely important - it's almost impossible to achieve a good makeup look without the right tools. For cream contouring, I recommend a really big foundation brush and a small concealer brush. I use the foundation brush for bigger spots on my face, and a concealer brush for smaller areas, ex. under my eyes & around my nose.

For powder bronzer, I use e.l.f.'s Contour Brush. It's perfect for getting bronzer in the right places!  I actually have a more expensive version from Sephora, but I like the e.l.f. one better! For my highlight, I use a fan brush.  It's perfect for sprinkling bright highlight onto the face. For my matte highlight - think banana powder - I use a blending brush. It packs the color on perfectly, and it doesn't crease at all.

It's hard to find brushes, so here are a bunch that well help you apply your contour easily:

4. Contour away!

Finally, it's time to contour! Now that you know all about your face, have your materials ready - it's time to apply it all.  Makeup gurus typically put dark shades around the edges of their faces, underneath their cheekbones, and along the edges of their noses. Then, they apply highlights along the tip of their noses, underneath their eyes, and on their foreheads and chins.

Now you know how to perfectly contour! Show us how you contour by posting a picture on Instagram with the hashtag #sensiblestylista and tell us what makeup tips you wanna know next!

Top 5 Best Eyeshadow Palettes

If you haven't been able to tell by my Beauty Trend posts, I'm completely and utterly obsessed with makeup! I love mostly everything, but there are certain products and brands out there that are pretty horrible. So, today I'm going to share my top five favorite eyeshadow palettes with you guys!

1. Lorac Pro Palette

If you haven't tried this palette yet, you need to. It's basically a cult classic -- everyone who tries it becomes obsessed. Although Lorac sells tons of different palettes, they only sell two pro palettes (PRO and PRO 2.) Their other sets (ex. Unzipped and Dream Girl) are good too, but they don't have the same kind of formulation.
Both Pro Palettes contain 16 shades - their top rows are all matte shadows, and their bottoms are shimmery. The colors are all gorgeous, and they're really easy to work with. They blend effortlessly and have amazing color payoff.

If I had to criticize either of these palettes, it'd be that their shadows can be a little chalky. You have to be really careful and tap your brush before application, or you could have some serious fall out! If you want warmer colors, go with the Lorac PRO -- it contains warm browns and golds.  For cooler tones, go with the Lorac PRO 2 - it's my personal favorite. It contains pinks, purples, and grays!  These palettes retail for $42 and come with a sample size "Behind the Scenes" eye primer.  They're expensive but well worth the splurge!

2. Tartelette

If you're like me, you love rocking a sparkly bright eye, but sometimes it's nice to tone it down with a clean matte eye. If you want to rock the latter, the Tartelette palette is a must-have. I've always known that Tarte was a good brand, but I'd never tried their eyeshadows before this palette. Now I'm officially obsessed!
This palette comes with twelve shades. I view it as three separate quads. The top row has warm browns, the second row has purples, and the third row has cool browns. Each "quad" then has four shades, ranging from light to dark.  Like the Lorac PRO palettes mentioned above, these colors are amazingly easy to work with and have a really strong color payoff.   Tartelette sells for $44, but all its shadows are exclusive to the palette.  Although it contains fewer shades and is pricier than the Lorac PRO/PRO 2, it's a necessity for simple day looks.

3. Naked Palettes

Even if you know nothing about makeup, you've probably heard of Urban Decay's Naked Palette. That one palette turned into three palettes, which then became a full line; now you can purchase Naked foundation, Naked blush, Naked bronzer, etc.
At first I was definitely obsessed -  I'm a little ashamed to admit that I have all three + the Naked basics palette - but now I think they're a little overrated. They're definitely good palettes with gorgeous colors, but personally, I'd go with the Lorac PRO/PRO 2 or Tartelette.  However, they still do rank #3 on my favorite eyeshadow palette list!

Back when I bought the aforementioned palettes, they sold for $49 each, but due to their popularity, Urban Decay hiked up their prices. Now, each palette is $54 - they come with an eyeshadow brush and a sample of Urban Decay's Primer Potion. UD calls the first palette "bronze-hued," the second "taupe-hued," and the final "rose-hued."   Personally, I think the third palette's kind of a filler because none of the shades really work alone.  You need to mix them with different colors from the first two sets.

4. Wet and Wild

So far, all the palettes listed have been pretty steep, as far as money goes. If you just want to  experiment with fun new eyeshadows, I recommend going with Wet and Wild! Their packaging isn't fancy or eye-catching - it's really just plastic - so they don't get a very good rep, but their products are amazing! As you guys know, I own a lot of expensive eyeshadow palettes, but I often find myself reaching for my Sweet as Candy trio.
Wet and Wild has 12 of these trios, and they have inscriptions on the shadows that tell you where to put the shade -- BROWBONE, CREASE, and EYELID. I don't really follow them thought - I like to pair other shades with the trio.  In my opinion, the quality's comparable to Urban Decay's Naked palettes - they don't have random sparkle chunks like a lot of lower end eyeshadows - and each set only costs $3. If you want to experiment with eyeshadow or try new shades, go out to Walgreens or CVS right now and buy some Wet n Wild eyeshadow!

This is another palette that won't break the bank.  There are two in total: one with matte shades and one with shimmer shades.  Each set contains 12 different shadows. I've only tried the matte palette, but the shimmer one is next on my list of new makeup to buy! The palette's pretty warm for the most part, and it has varying shades of brown with a few pink/purply shades.
These colors are extremely creamy and, like all the other palettes, have a really strong color payoff. Use a really light hand when applying because they can be a little difficult to blend. I don't typically use this palette alone. I like to put a shimmery shade on my lid and then use a deep chocolate brown (in this palette) for my crease.  The palettes are available for $20 and are sold exclusively at Target. If you're looking for perfect day-time matte shades try this palette!

On a related note, make sure you purchase a set of solid brushes for application.  Without good tools, the quality of your eyeshadow/s won't even matter! You can't achieve a gorgeous eye look without using the right brush. I recommend adding these brushes to your collection:

What do you guys think of these palettes? Do you like any of them? Are you gonna try any of them?

Beauty Trends: The Lip Edition

Big lips are all the rage lately - I'm sure you guys have seen the "Kylie Jenner Challenge".  Some people have been taking it a bit too far, but the trend's still real.  If you want to make sure your lips look on point this summer, here are the top trends you should know about:

1. Overdrawn Lips

Women have been using lip liner to overdraw their lips for decades because it creates the illusion of bigger lips.  Lately, this technique has really taken off. The idea is simple: you use a lip liner and draw directly onto your skin as opposed to tracing your lips.

The best way to do this is to use a well-sharpened pencil and start the lining at your cupid's bow. Draw the little semicircle a tiny bit above your natural cupid's bow, then follow those lines down the sides of your lips. Make sure the line you draw meets the natural end of your lip. If you overdraw the corners of your mouth it will look completely unnatural!

2. Contoured Lips

Contouring has been huge lately -- another technique popularized by the Kardashians. However,  a lot of people overlook the contouring of one's lips. Just like the rest of the face, the lips have shadows and highlights that can be intensified with makeup.  To do this, you want to take a darker shade and outline where the shadows are on your lips and take a lighter shade and highlight where the light naturally hits your lips.
Contouring is different for everyone because highlights and shadows vary on each individual person. The main place you want to contour is underneath your lips -- applying a darker shade right under your bottom lip will make it appear much bigger. For highlighting you should do the opposite.  Apply a lighter shade in your cupid's bow.
There are other tricks you can do as well, like putting a dark shade down the center of your bottom lip to make it appear thicker - that depends on the shape of your lips though. I recommend taking a bright light and shining it on your lips to help you locate and define where your contours are!

3. Matte Lips

Glossy lips used to be all the rage -- in the 2000's no handbag was complete without at least 3 lip glosses. Now it's all about matte lips!
Every brand, from high end to low end, has about a million different matte lipsticks -- my personal favorite being NYX Cosmetic's awesome collection. Unfortunately, we all probably still have that favorite glossy lip color. Luckily, turning any glossy shade into a matte color is easy! All you need to do is take a loose setting powder and lightly pack it onto your lips. You have to make sure the powder is really finely milled or else you'll get chunks. Also, make sure you don't put too much powder on or it'll make the lipstick/gloss way too thick!

4. Liquid Lipstick

The lipstick bullet has been the classic way to apply for centuries, but tons of brands are starting to develop liquid lipstick.  It looks and applies like lip gloss, but dries like lipstick.
This product is really awesome because it has the benefit of lipgloss application: super easy to apply and work with. Most liquid lipstick is also matte, following the previous lipstick trend discussed above. The only issue I've had is that it tends to settle into your lips' creases pretty easily. If you're planning on wearing a liquid lipstick out, make sure you bring it to reapply!

What do you guys think of these lip trends? Are you going to try any of them? If you do make sure to snap a pic to post on Instagram and tag #sensiblestylista so we can check them out.  And make sure you check back soon to see the hottest trends for your brows!

June Beauty Review

1.  Trilane Retinol + Vitamin C serum = magical powerhouse.  This amazing moisturizer visibly reduces the signs of aging and leaves your skin luminous and glowing.  It smoothes and evens out skin texture and speeds the turnover of skin cells!  It also diminishes brown spots and minimizes pores! FYI: a little bit goes a long way so don't be scared by the price tag.  Available HERE for $42.73.  Use code SAVERETC to get 20% off your purchase.  You're welcome in advance *grins* Code expires 12/31/15.

2.  Adovia Dead Sea Salt Scrub - Made with REAL dead sea salt - 100% pure and genuine for an infusion of 21 minerals essential to proper skin function.  The fine grains exfoliate the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal new, radiant skin!  Moisturizes deeply, infusing skin with luxurious hydration that lasts all day.  I like this so much more than the Aveda body scrub I was using!  I'm a fan.  This is a must-have for summer!  I like using this on my legs and arms.  Available here for $14.95 (originally $22).

3.  Exuviance Intensive Eye Treatment Pads - These eye pads are SERIOUSLY luxe.  You'll feel like you're in a freakin' spa.  They firm and hydrate your eye area while stimulating cell renewal and minimizing fine lines and wrinkles with Lactobionic Acid and Pro-vitamins A, C and E.  Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes are usually one of the first signs of aging.  Your eye area is thin and delicate, and it's constantly exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight and free radicals which weaken skin's support matrix leading to deep "crow's feet" wrinkles.

These single-use pads contain amazing concentrated ingredients that provide maximum anti-aging benefits GENTLY.  These pre-packaged sets refresh, replenish and revitalize!  It's mad simple to use. Just cleanse and dry the area, gently place one pad under or around each eye, and smooth it carefully onto your skin.  Relax for 10-30 minutes and then remove both pads! Throw them away after because they're non-reusable.  As always, Exuviance doesn't disappoint.  Their products are always on point! Get them for $48 HERE - 12 individually packaged applications.

Powered by Brandbacker, but all opinions are my own.

4.  Foreo Luna for Sensitive/Normal Skin - OBSESSED with this device.  Your skin looks hella radiant in three days.  If you want to get a deep cleanse + anti-aging benefits , the Luna's a must- have.  The device uses T-sonic technology, which delivers up to 8,000 pulsations per minute, and it's clinically proven to remove 99.5% of dirt and oil and 98.5% of makeup residue. It's fully waterproof and it lasts up to 450 uses per full charge.

I like this SO much better than the Clarisonic Mia.  I actually returned that device after a week because it made me break out like whoa!  The Luna is much gentler and it's easier to take care of.  I really can't recommend it enough!  Heads up, this item is a SPLURGE!  Think of it as a really good investment.  FYI: Use code SLISTA to get an extra 10% off your purchase + free shipping.  Valid until 7/2.

Beauty Trends: The Eye Edition

Some people say that the eyes are the windows to the soul.  If that's the case then we have to make sure our eyes look as stylish as can be! This week's edition is all about eyes, so here are a few of this seasons hottest looks.

1.  Winged Eyeliner

Winged eyeliner has been around since the dawn of makeup. It was always something that existed, but most people only wore it for special occasions - few used it as an everyday look, but recently it has become extremely popular.  Everyday girls and beauty gurus alike wear wings on a daily basis. It's amazing how a simple flick can up the gorg factor.
My favorite way to wear a wing is with a simple, natural, brown and beige eyeshadow. Do you guys have a favorite way? If you do, let us know by commenting below! There are tons of different ways to apply wings  (ex. liquid liner, gel, pencil) - I've attached a few of my fave products for each in the widget below!

2.  Spidey Lashes

In the past, thick, clumpy lashes were viewed as a bad thing; a natural, wispy look was preferred.  "Spidey lashes," the hot new mascara trend, is the utter opposite of the latter.  Essentially, this look is achieved by putting on many coats of mascara and letting your lashes all clump together.
This trend's very controversial - most people either love it or hate it. How do you guys feel? Would you rock spidey lashes or go with a more natural application? Scroll down below to purchase the best mascaras and falsies to achieve this edgy look.

3.  A Pop of Color

If you follow us on Facebook then you already know that pastel eyeliner is a new trend we're eyeing. However, it is not the only way you can bring color into your eyes. It has become very popular on runways for makeup artists to create light glows in their models' eyeshadows.
The "pop of color" trend can be executed in various ways.  Try applying a flash of neon in the tear duct or wearing a pastel eyeliner. I personally like applying a simple, brown eyeshadow and adding a pop of blue or purple onto my lower lash line.

4.  Smoldering Eyeshadow
Smokey eyeshadow is a trend that has lasted the test of time, the simple fade from white to black is classic. The smokey eye is very easy to manipulate with color or a cut crease, but the current popular technique is to apply a dark color all over.
If you flip through Vogue, you will see that every model has black smudged all over in a seemingly careless manner. Achieve this by taking a big fluffy brush and packing a dark brown or black eyeshadow all over your lid.  Then take your brush and run the color under your lower lash line. Some makeup artists even add a little lip gloss to the shadow to make the eyelids look greasy! What do you guys think of this trend - is it a do or a don't?

How do you guys feel about the aforementioned trends - any faves? Make sure y'all check back next week to read about the hottest lip trends!

1.  Amaro Organics Vitamin C Serum ($19.95) - So much winning with this fab serum.  Vitamin C brightens and smoothes like whoa, while increasing the production of collagen to highlight the skin's natural elasticity and counteract fine lines and wrinkles.  Made with natural plant-based ingredients!   If you're lookin' to try out different serums, hit this one up!

2.  Premium Organic Argan Oil Shampoo ($24.99) - This fab shampoo is super gentle - which I love - probably because it's supposed to prevent hair loss, haha.  It strengthens hair, adds volume, and contains essential nutrients that nourish like no other - has biotin to strengthen locks, niacin to increase circulation, and DHT blend to promote hair growth.  Make sure y'all leave it on for 2 minutes for full absorption!

3.  Premium Organic Argan Oil Based Conditioner ($24.99) - Made from 99% veggie base ingredients, coconut and vegetable proteins help hydrate, heal, and repair damaged hair from root to end without adding buildup.  The organic argan oil adds shine and body to all types of hair.  Works best with the shampoo reviewed above - safe to use daily.
