September 2015 - Sensible Stylista

Funky Pants

Alright everyone, it's time for my weekly office-friendly look!  I centered today's OOTD around my BCBG pants.  I bought these way back in the day, but they sat in the back of my closet because I didn't have the confidence to wear them out.  While I was going through my closet and figuring out what to keep, sell, and donate, I finally decided that it was time to man up!
I decided to stick with a neutral color scheme for today's look.  I styled my high-waisted bottoms with a ruffled tank and a chic blazer for a polished, sophisticated vibe.  Since I don't have product links for you guys, here are other adorable options for y'all:
My top sans jacket.  I bought this tank at H&M a while back for $10.  I absolutely love their sales, but shopping their online store can be a pain since they don't accept returns in stores - hopefully they'll change their policy soon! Do you guys shop online often? If so, at what stores?

Remix: The Drapey Parka

I'm beyond excited to remix my Aero parka for you guys - clicky here if you missed the first post! Anywho, I thought I'd tackle brown & black today on SS.  I feel like a lot of people are afraid to wear the aforementioned color combo.  I'm not quite sure why, but it's become a fashion faux-pas. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the pairing.  For today's OOTD, I threw on a long, black knit and paired it with leggings (my cold weather uniform, ha).  I wore my brown parka on top and put on tobacco colored boots to match. To finish off my look, I carried my Coach crossbody.  The print injects personality, while the color scheme ties the whole look together.  What do you guys think of the color combo - is it a do or a don't?
Let's take a closer look at my new boots courtesy of Cat Footwear. I absolutely LOVE them because they're so cute and comfortable - you get Ugg-like comfort without the ugg-ly design, hardy har har. Wedge heels are the best because they give you height without pain. A total win for vertically challenged people like myself, ha.  If you're looking for fab investment boots, make sure you guys pick up a pair HERE - I'm wearing tobacco, but they're also available in black and cafe.  Note: these boots cost a pretty penny - they're expensive, but remember, you're paying for quality!

The Navy Evening Gown

Oh how I love fancy evening dresses.  This gem, courtesy of Ever Pretty, is currently my favorite concert gown.  I seriously feel like royalty wearing this!  The sequin flowers are beautiful, and the mesh detailing is just the right amount of sexy.  It has a concealed zipper in the back and is conveniently padded so you don't have to worry about bra straps or any of that nonsense.  Heads up, it's 100% polyester so it's not stretchy - I definitely recommend sizing up because this dress runs small!  Make sure you pay attention to measurements.  I ordered a US 4, and it's still a bit tight - a 6 would've been a better choice!  I usually wear a 0 or a 2 so don't freak out - size is just a stupid number anyway.  For those of you interested, this gorg dress is available HERE (product no. 08531) for $74.99.  IMO, the price is quite reasonable for an evening gown.  Use code kimberly to get an extra 10% off.
I told you guys the floral embellishments were stunning!
Ever Pretty sells dresses for all occasions:  weddings, prom, casual, summer, and so on and so forth. Their prices are sensible, and their collection is quality so make sure you guys check them out. Where do you guys like to shop for formal gowns/cocktail dresses?

All About Tencel

I can't wait to tell you guys all about my new parka from Aeropostale.  This jacket is, hands down, my favorite piece of outerwear right now. It's made of 100% tencel, and it seriously feels like butter against my skin.  I'm a huge fan of the loose, slouchy fit because it oozes style with ease. For those of you interested, this piece is currently on sale here for $42.  Trust me, it's worth every penny!  I'm telling you guys, Aero's legit now. Now don't get me wrong, not everything is gold - they still sell their token "aero" graphic tees - but they carry some really cute designs.  I recommend browsing their Bethany Mota & Toyko Darling lines.
Anywho, let's move onto my dress (which is also made of tencel BTW)!  I styled it with my Aero parka for a monochromatic vibe. I think this pairing's tres chic, but I may or may not be biased, ha! This sleeveless number is a total must-have in my opinion though.  It's available HERE for $38 (originally $82).  Cop it while you can because, a) it's probably going to sell out soon, and b) you're going to get so much wear out of it.  It's comfy like the staple shirtdress, but as a plus, this piece has a self belt that strategically flatters by highlighting the small of one's waist.
Let's take a look at my dress sans parka!  Isn't it super cute? I love that the back's slightly longer! I don't have to worry about flashing someone because of the shirt tail hem, ha.  I kept things simple on the accessory front by simply incorporating a pop of animal print.  I threw on my current fave heels to finish off the look.  I featured these shoes HERE a couple days ago - clicky if you missed my collab with Castro!  Also, if you're interested in purchasing a pair yourself, simply click HERE.  I guarantee that you'll love these.

Sensible Stylista x Castro

I'm beyond excited to partner up with Castro today on SS.  I recently discovered them online, and I'm a huge fan already.  Their collection is elegant, classy, and effortlessly stylish.  I wanted to feature a trendy yet polished look for you guys so I centered today's OOTD around a chic drape jacket.  This lightweight piece is a dream for transitional weather.  The design's sophisticated, and the quality's on point (comparable to BCBG).  I'm wearing it in stone, but it's also available in black HERE.  For $63.33, this piece is a steal - you're getting designer clothing for a fraction of the price.  FYI, this item fits true to size.  I'm wearing an XS below!
I paired my jacket with a matching blouse that I picked up at Off Saks a week ago.  I was pumped because I found IRO - one of my favorite brands - in the sale racks.  I could've gone monochrome, but I decided to wear faux-leather instead for texture.  To finish off the look, I accessorized with a bold bag and shoes.  Animal print is always a good idea - just make sure you don't go overboard.  We want tasteful not tacky!
A close-up of my accessories.  FYI, my bag's from Coach.  I purchased it recently from their online factory outlet.  I'm officially a fan because they've really stepped up their game!  Coach is different now.  Their BS (bags + shoes, ha) are super cute, and they no longer plaster their logo on all their items.  Moving on, let's talk shoes.  These babies are pricey (available here for $79.23), but I promise that you'll get tons of wear out of them.  They look amazing with any and everything.  Heads up, they don't sell half sizes.  I recommend sizing down - I'm a 6.5, and their 6 fit me perfectly.  If you're looking to step up your shoe game, purchase these STAT.

Soft Surroundings Grand Opening: Fairfax Corner

Yay for grand openings! I don't usually go to local events, but I've decided to be much more active this year.  I'm going to try and have a social life for once, ha.  For those of you who don't know me, I'm a serious workaholic.  I spend all my time trying to better myself - productivity makes me happy, and I dig the hustle.  With that said, it doesn't hurt to have some balance!  Soooo, my mom and I decided to go to Soft Surroundings' grand opening at Fairfax Corner.  If you guys live in the DMV, you need to check FC out stat - it's a really cute shopping complex with tons of stores and restaurants.  This was actually my first time at a Soft Surroundings.  I was excited because I didn't know what to expect.  After browsing, here's what I can tell you guys:

1.  They're a lifestyle brand - they sell home goods, make-up/skincare, clothing, and more!
2.  I'd describe their clothing as Chico's meets Free People.  They carry a lot of cute stuff, but IMHO, their line's geared towards gals in their late 20's+.
3.  Their interior decor is legit.  Lots of fresh flowers everywhere, and the store styling is on point.  Serious props to Soft Surroundings.  I couldn't stop snapping pictures, ha.
4.  Their clothing's reasonably priced.  Most of their stuff is under $100!
5.  Every grand opening should have free champagne and macarons.
Have any of you guys shopped at a Soft Surroundings? Let me know by tweeting or commenting below.  You all know how much I love hearing from y'all.  Also, a huge thanks to the Virginia's Blogger Club and Jim Manno (PR Manager of Soft Surroundings) for having me there as media.

Queen of the Fall

I absolutely love H&M. They have amazing sales, and their clothing's always cute!  I scored this top HERE for $10 a few weeks ago.  Honestly, I'm shocked that it's still available.  If you like loose knits, do yourself a favor and buy this STAT.  I guarantee it'll become a wardrobe fave!  Let me share some basic info with you guys.  The sweater's made of a soft rayon & acrylic blend - it's wide-cut with long sleeves and has a seam at the front with slits on the sides.  The back's longer so it covers your booty!  I'm not super confident about my derriere - I'm no Jen Selter, ha - so I'm all for that cut.

There are so many pros going on with this top.  For one, it's extremely comfortable.  If you want to scrub it with style, throw this baby on. You'll look awesome in minutes. Wear it with stretchy skinnies or jeggings, grab your everyday tote, and throw on sneakers for a fashionable ensemble. Oversized tops are the best because you don't have to worry about muffin top or any of that BS.  I'm going to be real with you guys and admit that I've gained a lot weight this summer.  My pants don't fit right, and this is probably the heaviest I've been in years.  It's definitely time for me to get off my butt and sculpt my body for the better, but until then, dresses, loose tops, and high-waisted bottoms will be my staples.
This top seriously looks amazing with everything.  Animal print is usually bold, but this piece isn't too "in-your-face."  The dark/light gray color combo is subtle and chic.  Pair it with any pant and ooze style with ease.  This top is also available in white & light gray if you're interested.  I actually ordered the white but returned it because it was too sheer for my taste.  If you're into that, shop away by all means, but personally, I'm not a huge fan.  The leopard print though? That's a must-have!  FYI: I'm wearing a size XS because the piece fits true to size.

I paired my top with periwinkle skinny jeans.  I got them at Macy's way back in the day during a blowout sale so I don't have a link for you guys.  These are really similar though.  They may seem pricy, but $67 + free shipping for J Brand is actually pretty good.  Designer jeans usually go for way more!  Moving on, I accessorized with a dainty t-necklace and threw on open-toed faux-snakeskin pumps.  These heels, courtesy of UKIES, are legit!  The craftsmanship is impeccable, and they're extremely comfortable because they're made with nanoGel tech and have added arch support.  I'm a huge fan of their brand because they value both design and comfort.  For those of you interested, they're available HERE.

The Animal Print Skirt

I love Wednesdays because I get to share my work-friendly looks with you guys.  I'm especially excited to tell you about today's post because I'm wearing a fabulous "new" skirt - FYI, new is in quotation marks because it's a hand-me-down.  My mom gave me this piece recently, and it's quickly becoming a favorite because I may or may not (I totally do) have an obsession with animal print.  I wish I had a product link to share, but unfortunately, my mom bought this years ago so it's no longer available online.  Here are other adorable options for you to browse though:
I styled my pencil with a classic tank to keep things clean.  Animal print can be quite bold so if you want to play it "safe," wear one piece at a time and pair it with neutrals like I did below.  BTW, this was totally unintentional, but my cardi, bag, and shoes magically match - that definitely worked in my favor because the hue creates a cohesive whole.  Finally, to top off today's OOTD, I threw on a chunky statement necklace from Sparkles & Pop.
A close-up shot of my jewelry!  I absolutely love Sparkles & Pop.  Make sure you guys check them out.  I guarantee you'll love their online collection.  They seriously have something for everyone! Don't forget to register to get an extra 15% off + free shipping on your first order.

The Drawstring Pant

When I was younger, I used to live in sweats, hoodies, and yoga gear.  That was my unofficial uniform back in the day.  Fortunately, I've learned to scrub it with a bit more sophistication now that I'm older.  I centered today's post around my new pants courtesy of Velvet Heart.  These printed bottoms have a drawstring waist and soft elastic ankles.  They're made of rayon, but they feel like silk.  I'm wearing a size small, but an XS would've fit me better because they're true to size.  For those of you interested, they're available HERE for $72.  They're expensive, but you definitely get what you pay for!

Continuing on with today's OOTD, I threw on a crisp, sleeveless tank and accessorized with a statement necklace to finish off my look.  FYI, my top's also from Velvet Heart.  This particular design is no longer available, but they sell a similar version HERE for $29.  They actually carry a ton of cute tanks so you guys should definitely get your browse on HERE.  Their entire collection is legit - everything they carry is quality!
Side note: If you look closely, you'll see that I'm wearing heels.  Most people don't like to wear them when they're scrubbing it - feel free to wear flats or sneakers with this look instead.  I just prefer to wear heels even when I'm "dressed down."
Last but not least, here's a close-up shot of my new necklace from Sparkles & Pop.  Make sure you guys register to get an extra 15% off your purchase + free shipping.

The Oversized Knit

TGIF! As you all know, I'm a huge fan of faux-leather so naturally, I'm extra excited to talk about today's outfit.  I got this fab skirt from Chicwish years ago, and it's still a favorite.  I mean, can you blame me?  I can't resist the trendy asymmetrical cut and zipper detailing! Faux-leather skirts are a total must-have.  They ooze style with ease and look amazing with everything!  Since I don't have a skirt link for you guys, here are some cute alternatives for you all.
I paired mine with a loose knit for a casual look.  In case you're wondering, I got this top from Aeropostale for $20 a few weeks ago - it's from their Tokyo Darling line.  FYI, I actually featured them HERE recently for my "Find of the Day" series.  This top is cute and as a plus, it's super comfortable.  I'm going to get so much wear out of this!  I can already see myself whipping it out for my "fat days."  BTW, I don't mean that in a bitchy body-shaming way.  I just have days when I feel bloated and unattractive.   I've learned how to keep it classy while scrubbing it though so it's not a problem!
Made of a poly and rayon, this chic knit can be purchased here for $20.  I got it in grey, but it's also available in blue and plum.  Heads up, this piece is sheer so you'll probably have to wear a cami underneath.  To be honest, I didn't realize it was until way later.  As you can see, I wore a nude bra.  I don't really care though.  I was wearing my hair down so it wasn't noticeable.  I think it'd actually be really sexy to wear a black bralette underneath.  I'm a big fan of strappy versions!

Remix: Cindy + Johnny Blazer

It's time for a remix! A while back, I partnered up with Cindy + Johnny to style their chic Dylan blazer - if you missed the aforementioned post, click HERE.  I loved the piece so much that I decided to re-style it today for Workwear Wednesday.  I started with a solid, neutral canvas (aka my black pencil skirt).  FYI, I bought it at Ann Taylor years ago, but you can find a skirt like this anywhere because it's a wardrobe staple. Stores like Banana Republic Factory Outlet, Talbots, and H&M carry quality versions.

I paired my skirt with a cute but comfortable tee.  I chose animal print because I wanted my look to stand out!  Think classic with a trendy twist.  I recently purchased this top at the Banana Republic Factory Outlet - it was really hard to resist because it was on sale for $7.  Plus, I could already see myself wearing it a million different ways.  I like to visualize different ensembles in my head when shopping - it helps me save money because I only let myself buy pieces I'll wear for sure.  If I can't style an item at least 3 different ways, I won't purchase it.

I threw on my C+J blazer on top to keep things professional.  I know I say this all the time, but blazers really do add polish and sophistication.  To top off my look, I accessorized with my Sparkles & Pop pendant necklace and carried my Bag Inc. leather tote.  Here's a close-up shot of my accessories.  On another note, I talk about the importance of the everyday tote HERE.  Click to read my article on, "4 Bags Every Girl Must Own."

In Love With a Boy

I'm super excited to "model" my new BCBG blazer for you guys.  I picked this baby up at their factory outlet during back-to-school sales.  This piece is currently one of my favorites.  The print's bold and fabulous, and I'm loving all the different blues.  As I'm sure you all know, I'm a huge fan of their line.  Their craftsmanship and designs are hard to top!  Here's my current lust-list (mostly outerwear because it's Fall):
Anyways, I wanted to style a casual look for you all today so I paired my new jacket with a simple button-front and jeans.  For those of you wondering, I got my top from Talbots a while back - it was on sale for $25.  I actually buy a lot of my clothing from there.  They carry really cute skirts and blouses!  Most of the time, their stuff's pretty expensive, but if you wait for big sales, you can score some great deals.
I can't wait to re-mix this jacket for you guys!  I'm thinking white skinnies, a black top, and fabulous jewelry!  How would you guys style this?

Find of the Day: The Strappy Crochet Tank ($12)

I'm very excited to tell you guys about today's find!  I recently bought this tank from Aeropostale, and I'm completely obsessed.  The deep neckline is just the right amount of risque - it's sexy yet tasteful.  If you're a fan of Francesca's or Free People, I guarantee you'll love this tank.  I have it in navy, but unfortunately, that color's sold out.  They still carry it in cream though!  I've been into looser silhouettes as of late so I ordered a size small.  It was a good call because I like the way it hangs but an XS would've still worked. As a plus, the straps are adjustable - I personally prefer shorter ones.  To sweeten the pot further, this tank's currently on sale HERE for $12!
I'm beyond impressed with Aeropostale.  They've really stepped up their game.  I know I've said this many times already, but they deserve serious props.  I absolutely love their Toyko Darling & Bethany Mota designs!  Have any of you guys shopped there recently? If so, what do y'all think of their new lines?

PS.  I'm currently hosting two giveaways on SS - click here to enter them and win some amazing prizes!

Around the World

I may or may not be obsessed with faux leather - not the shotty kind that looks like plastic, the good kind that passes for the real deal.  I picked this pleather skirt up at Banana Republic's Factory Outlet a few months ago.  It was a total bargain, and I lucked out because I stumbled upon it by chance.  I was looking for a new one because my BCBG version died.  I wore it so much that it ripped in several places.  It got a lot of wear though, and it was like, 8 years old so I'm over it, ha.

For today's outfit of the day, I paired my new skirt with a simple, white top for a crisp, clean look.  I threw on another Banana Republic find to top off the ensemble.  I purchased this (also at the outlet mall) for $40.  Its retail price was well over $150 - sorry, I forget the exact price because I tore off the tag - so it was a practical purchase.  You guys know how much I adore blazers.  They add polish and sophistication to any and every ensemble.

Look for Less: Steve Madden Fringe Booties

I'm totally excited to share today's post with you guys because I haven't done a "Look for Less" in AGES.  For those of you who have been following along, you all know that I'm utterly obsessed with my Shoetopia fringe boots - I styled them HERE not too long ago.  How is this relevant, you ask?  Well, I went window-shopping recently, and I saw these Steve Madden booties at the mall.  I couldn't help but notice how similar they were so here we are!
The SM booties (pictured above) are currently selling for $99.99, while my shoes only cost $36.99 + free US shipping.  Since I've worn both pairs, I can give you guys an accurate breakdown.  The differences between the two are small, but let's discuss them anyhow.  Let's start with color! They're both taupe, but as you can see, the SM version is darker.  Obviously that boils down to personal preference, but in my humble opinion, the lighter color's easier to style.  Moving onto heel height, SM's version is 3" high, while Shoetopia's is 3.25" high.  I go with the latter again - since they're equally comfy, I prefer to have the extra quarter inch.  Note: both have side zips.
The main difference lies in the fringe detailing - which you can see clearly in the shot above and below - and material.  The SM version is made of part-suede (the top segment), while Shoetopia's is faux-suede.  Some may actually prefer the latter since it's animal/vegan friendly, and as a plus, there's fur inside for max comfort and warmth.  All in all, I'd go with the "steal."  The design's equally cute and comfy so I can't really justify spending the extra $63.  That's up to you guys though!  Clicky HERE if you'd like the purchase the "splurge" and HERE to cop the "steal."

The Cashmere Scarf

Oh how I love Workwear Wednesdays.  I centered today's outfit around my new dress from TJ Maxx.  It's Betsey Johnson, and I got it on sale for $39.99.  I don't usually wear her designs, but I instantly fell in love with this dress because it's simple, classy, and comfortable.  The color's extremely chic, and as a plus, the piece feels like a sweatshirt.  This will definitely be a cold weather staple because it'll keep me nice and warm, while still making a stylish statement.  I accessorized with ivory pieces to match - I've been loving neutral tones as of late.  My necklace is an oldie but a goodie.  I got it at Lemon Drop Boutique HERE a while back, and it's still one of my favorites.  They take the classic pearl necklace and give it a trendy twist with layers and extra bling.
Moving on, let's take a closer look at my new Chicory scarf.  This piece oozes luxury, but then again, cashmere always does.  For those of you unfamiliar with the brand, they're based in San Francisco, and they're all about high quality accessories.  They carry three different kinds of scarves:  cashmere knit, cashmere woven, and silk twill.  My scarf is 100% cashmere, and it's hand made in Italy.  Yeah, it doesn't really get much better than that... until you see that there's a mini-bow on it.  Isn't it super cute?  I feel like this is something Blair Waldorf would totally wear.  I may or may not have a TV crush on her, ha.
